Autumn internationals: can the northern hemisphere fight back?

November 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Can England and co. get back to winning ways? Our friends at Chicken Dinner have put together this preview of the weekend’s internationals…

England v South Africa
This is the first time the two nations have clashed since last year’s World Cup final and England have lost their last five encounters with the Springboks. The good news is that England have won six of their last seven collisions at Twickenham, however South Africa have won all twelve of their matches in Europe since their last defeat there.

More previews after the jump:

Ireland v Argentina
Since becoming the first new nation in twelve years to reach the World Cup semi-finals last year, Argentina have been on a downward spiral, losing four of their last five. The most embarrassing of those defeats was a home defeat in June to Italy although they have also been beaten by Scotland, South Africa and France. Ireland haven’t been in great form themselves, losing five of their last six but boast a 100% home record against Los Pumas.

Scotland v Canada
This encounter is only available on BBC Interactive and understandably so because it’s hard to see 20/1 Canada pulling off an upset. Scotland have won both of the two previous collisions while Canada haven’t won any of their last eleven games dating back to July 2005 and have already lost to Ireland and Wales this month. Their last away win (not neutral) came against Italy over eight years ago and was their only success on the road in fifteen years.

Wales v New Zealand
New Zealand hold a 55 year, 19 game winning streak over their opponents and although Wales celebrated Six Nations Grand Slam success earlier this year, there is little to suggest they can end the run. The main trend in Wales’ favour is that the last two times they have been beaten by South Africa they have bounced back with two home wins. They beat Canada last week which means victory over the All Blacks would complete another double.

France v Australia
Ladbrokes offer 2/1 on France leading Australia at both half-time and full-time and that could be a worthwhile bet considering their last three home games against the Wallabies have finished in that fashion. For some reason this game is only being broadcast in Ireland.
