US Open: The Men

Swot up on the facts, people

More drama at the US Open as Novak Djokovic misheard a joke delivered by Andy Roddick, took it all the wrong way, and ended up declaring war on the crowd. Not the best move ever. He’s got everyone’s favourite sporting gentleman, Roger Federer, in the semis, then Nadal or Murray (that’ll be Nadal, then)… Here’s how the semi-finalists shape up, statistically speaking:

Roger Federer

» Federer is bidding for his fifth straight US Open title - a feat that hasn’t been achieved in the Grand Slam Era and was last managed by Bill Tilden in 1924..

» The last time the 12 time Grand Slam champions went the whole year without winning any of the big four was in 2002 but worryingly he hasn’t won more than three matches in a row since Wimbledon.

Rafael Nadal

» The Spaniard has won 39 of his last 40 games and comes into the tournament with a staggering 390 point lead in the ATP Race.

» However this is the Grand Slam that the world number one has performed the weakest at. This will be his first ever semi-final.

Novak Djokovic

» The Serb lost out to Federer in the final last year but is ahead of him in this year’s ATP Race and is the reigning Australian Open champion.

» In three of the last four years Federer has completed the Australian/US double but the last player before him to achieve the feat was Jimmy Connors in 1974 - which doesn’t bode well for Djokovic.

Andy Murray

» Four of the last five Cincinnati Masters champions have reached the final of that year’s US Open with three winning at Flushing Meadows.

» There hasn’t been a British US Open winner since Fred Perry way back in 1936. Greg Rusedski became the only Brit to reach the final since in 1997, losing out in four sets to Pat Rafter.
