US rookie has caddy with “history”
Eric Larson, a caddy who worked for Mark Calcavecchia back in the 80s, will carry Anthony Kim’s bag at this month’s Ryder Cup. But Larson has a little more on his CV than just “caddy”.
Kim was just ten years old when Larson started a 13-year prison sentence for selling cocaine - who said golf wasn’t rock and roll?
Larson served 11 years of the term, before being released in 2006 for good behaviour. Calcavecchia gave him his old job back, and earlier this year recommended him to Kim, one of the brightest young things on the PGA Tour. The rehabilitated Larson was Kim’s caddy for his first two PGA Tour wins, and now the pair look set for a long and prosperous future together.
There’s probably a joke about “doing bird” and “making birdies” in this story, but we’ll leave it to you to make it.
