All that Nadal-chasing is no good for you

World number two Roger Federer has announced he is taking an indefinite break from tennis as he tries to regain full fitness. The Swiss player has withdrawn from next week’s Stockholm Open and says he is in need of rest after a tough year.
The 27-year-old suffered a bout of glandular fever and has struggled all season (relatively speaking) as a result. Federer has also found himself increasingly eclipsed by Rafael Nadal and has taken the decision to rest in a bid to rediscover his best form.
“I feel fortunate to be healthy again,” he said. “But I want to remain at the top of the game for years to come and go after the number one ranking again. In order to do that, I need to get a proper rest and get strong again so that I am 100% fit for the remainder of the year or next year.
“At this point, I am not sure when I will be ready to play again, but I hope to be back at some point before the end of the year.”

i think roger that is a step in the right direction i had expected this to come sooner after the australian open , so that least the tennis world would have missed your classy presence this year but u didn’t ,u allowed nadal take ur number ranking and beat u on own favourite court. but all the same love this move of yours and still believe u are the greatest tennis player ever
ps …..how come we never get to read about sleaze on tennis players

I believe Roger is wise to rest. He can still work on his tennis by studying videos of other tennis players. I think if he studies other players’s thru video it will help him keep at the top of his game and it will help preserve his body. In particular if he watches Nadal’s shots in slow motion he will get a better handle on Nadal’s spin. Roger has such great hand-eye coordination that if he visualizes successfully hitting Nadal’s shots (or anyone elses) he will get even better. A good thing to do while he’s resting.
