Yes he will, say the turf accountants
While everyone’s getting excited about whether Padraig Harrington can maintain his recent form, or whether the American heavyweights like Phil Mickelson will fail to deliver again, we’re looking forward to seeing how the Ryder Cup rookies like Anthony Kim perform.
Kim has been installed by the bookies as the favourite to be the top debutant at the Valhalla Golf Club and our vague acquaintances at Chickendinner have been scrutinising the main contenders:
Anthony Kim
Already in 2008 Kim has become the first American under the age of 25 to win two PGA Tour tournaments since Tiger Woods in 2000. At the 2008 Open Championship, he was the joint-second best performing American behind Jim Furyk.
Justin Rose
The South Africa born Englishman was briefly the top-ranked Brit. However, while he made top 12 of every major in 2007, a tied-ninth finish at the PGA Championship was his only improvement this year, with his performances in the other three majors all dropping off.
Steve Stricker
At seventh in the world, the American is the top-ranked debutee appearing in this year’s Ryder Cup. His major performances this year, besides tying seventh at the Open Championship, were nothing spectacular. Aged 41, Stricker is comfortably the oldest of this year’s debutees.
